Victoria’s deputy premier and Minister for Education, James Merlino, paid a flying visit to Federation Training’s Morwell campus on Wednesday 14 February.

The Minister was in the Latrobe Valley to inspect progress at the Gippsland Tech School (GTS), currently under construction at the west end of the Morwell campus.  The GTS is one of 10 such schools across Victoria under development and scheduled to open in 2018.

GTS Director, Paul Boys, said whilst the visit was an opportunity to update the Minister on progress, it was also an opportunity to demonstrate what the school will offer once it is completed.

“The Minister was shown demonstrations of the robotics training and given an overview of other technologies such as Virtual Reality environments,” Paul said.

“We were very pleased that a number of industry representatives were able to join us and see first-hand how our building is being constructed and some of the technologies that will be featured in the student training experience.”

Guests touring the construction site included Paul Ford (Agribusiness Gippsland), Lesia Clark (Gippsland Forestry Hub), Michael Uhe (Safetech Industries) and Otto Stumpf from Energy Australia, while Project Supervisor, Stephen Hallett from Becon Constructions, was on hand to assist with the site tour.

Paul said the target date for completion of the Gippsland Tech School was the end of March 2018.

“We are expecting the school to be ready for the commencement of Term 2 and that will be after Easter,” Paul said.

The Gippsland Tech School will have a local industry focus on growth areas within the region such as food and fibre, health, new energy and advanced manufacturing.  The curriculum has been designed to allow students to work on real-life problems provided by industry and use the latest technologies to come up with solutions.
